What do you think?

Last night in an interview with Charlie Rose, Catherine Drew Gilpin Faust, President of Harvard, said that today there's a lot of information available to us but that's not the same as knowledge or wisdom. Juxtaposed to my recent experience at the Social Media conference, I find that worth thinking about. What do you think? Are we losing out with all the sound bites and minutia that's out there on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook?

  1. Unverified information is not knowledge, however anything you read on the internet, or anywhere else, should be verified before it becomes "knowledge." Wisdom comes when you begin to use the knowledge that you acquire. Tweets and sound bites are, to some minimal extent, a potential source of knowledge, but will never be wisdom. Wisdom is reflected in the knowledge you gather and how you use it.

  2. Another source of unverified information is emails that make the rounds, touting one fantastic claim after another. 99% of them are false, yet intelligent people will forward them on as holy writ.

  3. Amen to that! Disinformation is definitely not wise.
